From Halliday about the winery

“Not only one of the most historic wineries in Australia, with over 170 years of continuous winemaking by the direct descendants of the founding Potts family, but one of the leading quality producers in the land. Not so long before the start of the 21st century, its vineyards were flooded every winter by diversion of the Bremer River, which provided moisture throughout the dry, cool, growing season. In the new millennium, every drop of water is counted. The vineyards have been significantly upgraded and refocused: shiraz accounts for 45% of plantings, supported by 7 other proven varieties; sauvignon blanc, pinot gris and chardonnay are sourced from the Adelaide Hills. Bleasdale Vineyards is the Halliday Wine Companion 2024 Winery of the year.

Shiraz was first planted in the Langhorne Creek region in 1858, by Bleasdale, and they have been making superb wines from it ever since. This wine spent 18 months in a mix of French and American hogsheads. The wine is a bright maroon colour and then the aromas come to the fore. Plush, ripe, rich, a cracking regional Shiraz. Chocolate, black fruits, mulberries, leather and cocoa powder. The texture is an absolute highlight. It is gorgeously velvety through to the softest of tannins. Seamless in structure, the length is surprisingly long. Lots to like in this wine. Brilliant value.

A second generation small business crafting remarkable wines with innovation, humility, inclusivity and curiosity. We have a deep love for heritage styles, paired with an excitement for the new. This duality is who we are.

During a decorated career spanning more than three decades, Patrick celebrated international accolades while working as chief winemaker for several major labels. His focus switched in 1998, to fulfilling a more personal goal, in the establishment of the family owned and operated Patrick of Coonawarra. Patrick’s eldest son, Luke, has now taken over the family business and continues to produce highly regarded wines from the famed Terra Rossa soils of Coonawarra.

TASTING NOTE:

This Shiraz builds mouthfeel and rich fruit flavour, with medium bodied tannin complexity. It is a wonderfully round, complex wine that has all the hallmarks of a classic Australian Red.

WINEMAKER’S NOTE:

From our nothern block in Wrattonbully. Aged in predominatly older oak to ensure the richness of fruit is preserved and minimal tannin is absorbed.

VINTAGE NOTE:

We had good winter rainfall followed by a warmer than average Spring. This brought forward flowering by two weeks and lead to moderate bunch numbers with small berries. A cool Summer then allowed the vines to catch up and a slow, even ripening period followed. Overall a stong vintage with excellent cellaring potential.
