Vermentino hails from Italy’s Liguria region and the Mediterranean Islands of Sardinia and Corsica. It has a light to medium bodyand is similar in weight and profile to Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, and Riesling. This is a Italian variety made from the vermentino grape.
Whilst originating in Italy it is also now grown extensively in Australia. It makes a fresh white wine with a fresh palate and a great alternative to sauvignon blanc on a summer’s afternoon.
In South Australia you will find the grapes grown in McLaren Vale and Adelaide Hills. We have a Gold Medal winning Vermentino for Zonte’s Footstep that is an excellent example of this variety.
It pairs well with a lot of foods but with it’s refreshing taste is great with fresh fish and a spicy chicken dish. Why not head to a few cellar doors in the Adelaide Hills or McLaren Vale and give this white wine variety a taste. It is doing very well in the wine shows and is an excellent alternate white wine variety.
